Frequently asked questions

Jaeger v1 or v2?

v2, built on the OpenTelemetry Collector, is the current version; v1 has reached end of life.

Do I need a Jaeger client in my code?

No: you use the OpenTelemetry SDKs, and Jaeger receives OTLP natively.

Which storage should I use in production?

Elasticsearch, OpenSearch or Cassandra, optionally with Kafka as a buffer; never in-memory storage.

Jaeger or Tempo?

Tempo is cheaper to run and integrates with Grafana; Jaeger offers a standalone UI and relies on indexed databases.
