Frequently asked questions

Is OpenObserve free?

The open source edition is licensed under AGPL-3.0. An Enterprise edition adds SSO and custom roles among others: see the official page for its conditions.

OpenObserve or Elasticsearch?

OpenObserve aims for simplicity and cheap columnar storage queried with SQL. Elasticsearch offers richer full-text search, at the cost of heavier operations.

Do I need a cluster to start?

No: a single binary or container is enough. High availability requires Kubernetes, object storage and PostgreSQL.

Can I keep Grafana?

Yes for metrics: OpenObserve exposes a Prometheus-compatible API.
